Somaliland has taken an important step toward strengthening its response to severe noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) by joining the NCDI Poverty Network. Following this engagement, the Head of the NCDs Program at the Somalilander-American Health Association (SAHA), the National NCDs Coordinator from the Ministry of Health Development (MoHD), and healthcare providers from SAHA-supported NCD clinics at Burao and Gabiley General Hospitals participated in the PEN-Plus Master Trainer Training. The training was organized by the NCDI Poverty Network and hosted by the Mathiwos Wondu Foundation (MWF) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The training focused on building national capacity to deliver quality care for severe and complex NCDs at district and referral health facilities, with an emphasis on low-resource settings. As part of the program, participants visited the Mathiwos Wondu Foundation Muke Turi Primary Hospital PEN-Plus Clinic, where they exchanged practical experiences on service organization, early diagnosis and management of severe NCDs, program standards, health information systems, and strategies to improve the quality of care at the primary hospital level.

The knowledge and skills gained through this training will support the expansion of PEN-Plus services in Somaliland, with trained clinicians leading efforts to strengthen access to quality care for patients with severe NCDs nationwide.

The Republic of Somaliland has officially joined the Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries (NCDI) Poverty Network, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to address the growing burden of severe noncommunicable diseases and injuries among its most vulnerable populations.

The Somaliland–American Health Association (SAHA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Development (MoHD), hosted an inaugural event in Hargeisa to commemorate Somaliland’s official membership in the global network. The event brought together senior government officials, national stakeholders, and international partners.

Distinguished representatives from the NCDI Poverty Network attended the event, including Dr. Gene Bukhman, Co-Chair of the Network; Dr. Neil Gupta, Senior Director of Policy; and Dr. Natnael Abebe, Regional Advisor for East Africa. The event was co-chaired by Dr. Abdirahman Madar, President of SAHA and Co-Chair of the Somaliland NCDI Commission, and Dr. Ahmed Mohamoud, Director General of the Ministry of Health Development and Co-Chair of the Commission, alongside members of the Somaliland NCDI Commission.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening national capacity for equitable and integrated care, while prioritizing people living with severe NCDs and injuries who are most affected by poverty and limited access to health services.
Following the event, the NCDI Poverty Network delegation paid a courtesy visit to H.E. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, highlighting the Government of Somaliland’s strong support for advancing this critical public health agenda.


SAHA reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Health Development and national partners to ensure that this collaboration translates into meaningful, sustainable improvements in prevention, treatment, and care for people living with noncommunicable diseases across Somaliland.

NCDs are emerging as a significant contributor to preventable morbidity and mortality in Somaliland. Treating these disease entities (heart failure, hypertension, COPD / asthma, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, cancer, and mental health) requires coordinated acute and chronic care management across the hospital, outpatient, and community settings.

SAHA held its first Healthcare Quality Convention in

Hargeisa, Somaliland

 June 28 – 30, 2021

The theme of this inaugural SAHA conference was ‘Advancing Evidence-Based Healthcare in Somaliland’. SAHA believes that quality healthcare begins with evidence-based education at all levels of training and practice. As such, with Ariadne Labs and UpToDate, SAHA launched UpToDate, an electronic evidence-based clinical decision support software, in Somaliland.  The software will be used by medical students and physicians across Somaliland, free of charge, to learn and provide the best available evidence-based care to their patients throughout every stage of the diagnosis and treatment process.

]]> Assessing and Improving Medical-Grade Oxygen Supply Capacity in Somaliland during the Pandemic https://sahainfo.org/2021/06/06/better-health-care-is-our-mission-saha2021/ Sun, 06 Jun 2021 08:32:00 +0000 http://sahatemp.smgtsystems.com/?p=37902 Early in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, our team’s focus was to shore up hospital capacity to provide critical lifesaving measures, chief among them the provision of medical grade oxygen to patients in respiratory distress from SARS-CoV-2.  After a brief assessment, we concluded the country had critical shortage of oxygen.

We sought to improve the country’s oxygen capacity in two ways: 1) Raise funds and deliver oxygen concentrators and cylinders through our own logistics plan and 2) Raise awareness and alert stakeholders, including the government and philanthropist, about the critical gap in oxygen supply across the country. These efforts have paid major dividends; the hospital-grade oxygen generation and delivery capacity across all regions of Somaliland have improved dramatically. This development impacts and will continue to impact healthcare beyond the SARS-CoV-2 crisis.
